Back in the 70’s, when Disco (shudder) was king, audio engineers were struggling with the problems of electrical buzzing, noise and interference from the disco lights, strobes and electronics that lived along side the speakers.
An inventor and engineer named Ray Kimber came up with a solution that not only eliminated the RF interference caused by all of the disco lights, but had the amazing effect of improving the fidelity! By counter rotating sets of conductors to cancel the out the effects of the interference, Ray’s braided cable saved the day and a new company was born.
As best we can remember.... It was around 1980-ish when Ray himself drove through Humboldt county and stopped in to show off his invention.
He dragged some spools out of the trunk of his car and came inside (what was then Arcata Audio) to to show off this odd looking cable. The original Kimber 4PR.
He convinced Dave, the salesman working that day, to do some blind testing with his wire vs. what the shop was using. It was no contest. This funny looking wire brought new life to the sound.
It was the first product of it’s kind that actually made a noticeable, audible, difference on the sound of the speakers. Everyone in the shop listened and agreed. And we’ve all been fans of Kimber cable ever since.
In the decades that have followed, Kimber would continue to test various metals as conductors, assorted manufacturing protocols, assorted stranding sizes, different twist lengths and insulation, as well as methods for adhering insulation to cable. All the time improving, modifying, and expanding upon his original cable concept and designs.
The best cables keep getting better.
Over the years the Kimber products have strongly earned the respect of professionals, reviewers, and most importantly, audio enthusiasts like ourselves.
Northcoast Audio is proud to offer and demonstrate Kimber Kable in our showroom.
